Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi has given the clarion call to be “Atmanirbhar”. He stressed on the importance of local manufacturing, local market, and local supply chain, asking people to go “Vocal for Local”. With rising border tensions along the LAC, the favor for Indian apps is rising. The Indian Government has banned 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok and Helo, citing national security issues. This has led to frantic searches for alternate Indian apps.
Based on a publication at “Startup Unfold” and our own research, we have mapped 100% Made in India apps for the banned apps. Each of these apps has 100K+ downloads and a 4+ rating on Play Store, ensuring the quality of the apps is matched to their Chinese counterparts.
During the exercise, we found some lesser-known, but remarkably interesting apps. For video calling, we found Say Namaste as a good alternative. As a scanner, we found Doc Scanner produced quality PDFs. An alternate social networking platform, IamHere is disrupting location-based social collaboration and social commerce. Tiktok alternative Chingari and Helo alternative Sharechat have set new records on the daily downloads.
We hope with this list we can continue to support Indian apps and announce to the world that not only are we capable of leading world-class organizations, but we are also capable of building world-class apps.
